    Health Fair 2016 Recap

Our 1st Annual Health Fair held July 2 and 3, 2016 was a huge success. With raving reviews of wanting it more often, wanting it longer, wanting it in different communities, we are excited to share with you all the great events that occurred as the days went on.

    DAY 1

    DSC_2253

Before the first day of the event, several of the volunteers started our Towncry walk from Rock River to Moores Hood. We had a blast spreading the word as a loud speaker followed us. We were able to recruit many raffle ticket buyers, individuals willing to partake in the domino tournament and shed light on our goal of uniting out communities.

Our day 1 of the health fair started with devotion led by Bro. Miller. He later had a special dedication for the Omeally Family  (family of Moores Primary School student that passed away). After the dedication and moment of silence Social Development Commission (SDC) member, Mrs. Shamicka Peart-Williams spoke about community unity and community involvement in regards to health development. We then kicked started the day with our football 6-a-side match, which ended with team’s from Longsville and Chatteau competing in the finals. The winner received 10,000JM grand prize and a trophy, both team received medals and sponsorship to a competition November 19th (held by out partner SDC). After the final game was complete, we had special guests from Harbourview Football Club and Denbigh High School Youth Football teams partake in a friendly match. After the match, youth from the local communities were able to put on jerseys from either team and play along side the teams. This offered the youth the opportunity to be included in the event, but stress the importance of organizing youth sports in the communities.

While the football competition went on, we had members of the Train Fit Club of Kingston Jamaica (another one of our partners) get the crowd dancing and working out all at the same time. Several times throughout the day, crowds surrounded the stage to workout.

Our raffles prizes for this day were: Mystic Mountain tickets, Dolphin Cove Tickets, and Jewels /Hedonism Park Tickets.

    DAY 2

    DSC_2400

We started our day with devotion by Sis. Knight. Following we had a representative of the Clarendon Health Department, Ms Dionne Harrison, speak on proper nutrition habits. We had a financial advisor and past resident of the community, Mr. Ian Kelly. He shared tips and advice on how individuals can start to build financial security even with small amounts. Mr Rose, a representative from the Clarendon Health Department, led our physical activity session and got individuals up on their feet, moving and working out. Slowing it down, our guest speaker, Dr. Fadji Sylla-Roberts spoke on Hypertension.

Day 2 had other activities that kick start the day. Our Talent Show participants started with their auditions and then 4 participants advanced to the finals later on in the day (both in the teen and adult competition). Our first place winner for each category won $8,000 JM and a gold medal, our second place won $4,000 JM and a silver medal, 3rd place won $2000 JM and fourth place won $1000 JM.

But it didn’t end there, our domino winners won $5000 JM and the opportunity to be sponsored for a competition November 19th sponsored by one of our partners Social Development Commission (SDC). The big raffle prizes giveaway for this day were: a FLOW cell phone, a tablet, Dream Weekend ticket and a 42 inch television.

Throughout each day, we had giveaways of gift baskets for individuals who answered questions correctly, and/or participated in activities. Our health professionals/services included HIV testing, blood pressure check, cholesterol check, general physicals and much more. To increase the fun activities had bounce-a-bouts, merry go round, snow cones, cotton candy, hot dogs, grab bag, pick tree, Ring Toss, Match the Rubber Ducks and more!!!!

    Our New Partners

One of the great advantages of hosting our first annual health fair were the partners that came on board willing and ready to work with LAMB Foundation as we move forward.

Clarendon Health Department: After a great meeting with the head of the department Mr. Grant, we are moving forward working to improve the health conditions in the communities. We are currently in the progress of completing the proposal for the clinic and partnering with other organizations to have the infrastructure built. Visit the Health Department Website

Social Commission Development (SDC): Meeting with Mr. McKenzie and Mrs. Peart-Williams of the SDC we are excited to move forward with our partnership. Not only are we partnering with SDC on the sporting event November 19th. We are working with them to build unity among the communities. Since the health fair, LAMB Foundation has already attended a meeting at the Parish Council along side SDC and we becoming more involved in the strategic planning going forward. Visit SDC Website

Train Fit Club: After having great workout sessions with the members of the Train Fit Club at the fair, we are looking to partner on their upcoming events. These events include hikes throughout, workout challenges etc. This can get the community members out and about exploring more of their physical health and even the beauty of the country that surrounds them. Visit Train Fit Club Facebook Page

Rock River Primary School: Finally we would like to thank Rock River Primary School for being excited and immediately accepted our health fair being health at their school in 2017. We already have a place ready and waiting, so look out for the new date for the 2nd Annual Health Fair 2017. Visit Rock River Primary School Facebook Page

It is time for us to work together to strengthen our communities.

    IT’S NOT A ‘ME’ TING… IT’S A ‘WE’ TING

LAMB Health Fair is set out not just to provide health services, but to start the collaboration process between all communities.

If there is a problem in Rock River, let’s all find the solution and way to fix it. If you need help in Bird’s Hill, it is our duty to work together to lend a hand.

On Saturday, July 2nd at the health fair we are asking members from each community (from Rock River all the way to Palmer’s Cross- ALL communities in between) to sign up to be a part of our forum on Sunday July 3rd 9 am to 11 am.

    What is the Forum:

After evaluation from our preliminary needs assessments done in February and March in different communities including (Bird’s Hill, Rock River and Moores) we listened to the needs you requested. We are putting together committees with representatives from all communities that can bring forth the issues and concerns we can address in 5 key areas:

    1. Healthcare Access and Emergency Transport:
      • Work toward build the clinic, ongoing health fairs/services through out the year, raising funds to have our very own emergency transport
    2. Environmental Health
      • Focus issues such as proper garbage disposal, acquiring proper water for the community, and other health hazards in neighborhoods
    3. Job Opportunities
      • Begin learning the avenues for job opportunities. Bringing back information to the community so that community members can get proper training for jobs
    4. Educational Opportunities
      • Spreading the knowledge of educational opportunities for children and adults throughout the neighborhoods. Acquiring money to help individuals with school fees, school supplies etc.
    5. Community Development
      • Building back out communities to have events throughout the year such as fun day, tournaments, reading days, talent shows, financial advising etc. This will keep our communities active and working together.

On Sunday, we will begin brainstorming key issues in neighborhoods while working with foundations throughout Jamaica such as HEART for job opportunities and the Clarendon Health Department for Healthcare access and emergency transportation. We will lay grounds for regular meetings and projects to take place in each community as discussed and voted on by representatives in the meeting.

We are in this together, We can’t do this without you.

In addition, we have already secured our next location for LAMB HEALTH FAIR 2017.
